Malawi Exclusive Thousands of mourners on Monday gathered at Nanjaiko Residence in the area of Senior Chief Kunthembwe in Blantyre, to pay their final respect to veteran broadcaster Brian Banda, who died on August 8, 2026 after a short illness. Banda, who assumed office as Director General of the Malawi Broadcasting Corporation (MBC) in March this year, was described as a visionary leader who was determined to transform the state broadcaster. Chief Secretary to the Government, Dr. Justin Saidi, delivered the eulogy on behalf of President Professor Arthur Peter Mutharika. Dr. Saidi said the President was deeply shocked by the news of Banda’s death, describing it as “a great loss to our nation.” “Brian Banda had great plans, vision and strategies on how to strengthen the State Broadcaster, MBC,” Dr. Saidi told mourners. “He believed in consultation. On everything he was doing, he made sure everyone was aware. That was the kind of leader he was inclusive, transparent, and committed to teamwork.” Dr. Saidi added that Banda’s short time at the helm of MBC was marked by energy and a clear roadmap for reform, and that government would ensure his vision does not die with him. Banda joined MBC with decades of experience in broadcasting and was widely respected across the media industry for his professionalism and mentorship to young journalists. The send-off ceremony was attended by government officials, fellow broadcasters, civil society leaders, and members of the public who filled the Nanjaiko home and surrounding areas. Banda will be remembered for his dedication to public service broadcasting and his belief that MBC must serve all Malawians.
