Digital justice project takes shape in Likoma

Efforts to make justice services more accessible in Likoma have received a boost with the introduction of the EmpowerLine Plus: Enhanced Digital Justice Platform Project, which will use mobile technology to connect communities with justice information and support services.

The project was introduced to Likoma District Executive Committee (DEC) members on Wednesday during an entry meeting with the Gender and Justice Unit (GJU), which is implementing the initiative in partnership with the Irene M. Staehelin Foundation.

Project Manager for the Gender and Justice Unit Emma Chigwenembe said the initiative is intended to improve access to justice, particularly for survivors of gender-based violence (GBV), by providing information and links to relevant support services through digital platforms.

Chigwenembe explained that users with smartphones will be able to download the EmpowerLine application on Android and Apple devices to access information and services.

For people who cannot use the application, she said, a toll-free helpline will provide another way of accessing information on gender-based violence laws, justice procedures and available support services.

“The project, which is being implemented in 11 districts, will utilise the EmpowerLine mobile application and a toll-free helpline to enable people to access information, report cases and connect with relevant justice and support services,” Chigwenembe said.

She said the engagement with district officials was also aimed at identifying areas of collaboration and ensuring that the project responds to the challenges faced by communities in Likoma.

The initiative is expected to bring together key stakeholders, including the district council and the Gender Technical Working Group, to strengthen coordination in responding to gender-based violence and other justice-related concerns.

Director of Economic Planning and Development for Likoma District Jossen Tembo urged members of the District Executive Committee to take ownership of the project, saying their involvement would be important to ensuring that it addresses existing justice and gender-based violence challenges.
