The ruling Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) has warned senior party members holding public office to respect the constitutional authority of the President and to avoid actions that create competing centres of authority.

In a press statement issued by Secretary General Peter Mukhito, the DPP said it had taken note of issues raised during the recent press briefing by the Speaker of the National Assembly, who is also a member of the party’s Central Executive Committee.

Mukhito said while the party respects Parliament’s constitutional independence and oversight role, all senior officials must also uphold executive authority.

He added that the DPP expects all CEC members in public office to exercise responsibility, restraint and respect for institutional boundaries.

According to Mukhito, the party is particularly concerned when senior members use public platforms in ways that may create the impression of institutional conflict within a government that the party itself leads.

The statement comes after a press briefing held on Wednesday by the Speaker of the National Assembly, Hon. Sameer Suleman. During the briefing, the Speaker addressed about 13 issues of national importance.
Key among them were concerns surrounding the alleged missing of millions of kwacha at the National Oil Company of Malawi, NOCMA, the ongoing blackouts affecting the country, and other governance matters. The Speaker is also a member of the DPP’s Central Executive Committee.
