The race for Malawi Congress Party (MCP) regional committee positions has intensified, with party members strategically repositioning themselves ahead of the forthcoming regional elections.

Several names have emerged as interested candidates, including Vitus Gomamtunda Dzoole Mwale, who is vying for the position of Chairperson for the Lilongwe-Mchinji Region, Arthur Sungitsa and Mphatso Jones Boti, among others.

*Court Order Behind the Polls*

The heightened political activity is in line with a High Court order compelling the MCP to hold fresh internal elections.

On May 8, 2026, High Court Judge Allan Hans Muhome delivered a consent judgement in Blantyre ordering the party to hold elections for all its regional and district committees within 12 months.

The case was brought by MCP member Lovemore Chauwa Phiri, who challenged the legality of the party’s existing district and regional committees, arguing that their mandates had expired and they were operating contrary to the party constitution.

In his ruling, Justice Muhome declared that office bearers in both regional and district committees had overstayed their five-year constitutional term limits and that all affected positions had lapsed.

“The Defendant must hold elections for all positions in all the Regional Committees and District Committees within twelve (12) months,” the judgement reads.

Reacting to the ruling, MCP Director of Legal Affairs George Jivason Kadzipatike said he could not defend the indefensible, acknowledging that the party needed to comply.

Subsequently, MCP Secretary General Richard Chimwendo Banda announced in a memorandum dated September 19, 2026, that the party will hold elections for all regional and district committees, including newly demarcated political regions and districts, following a National Executive Committee meeting held on September 9, 2026. The polls will also cover constituency, ward and area committees nationwide before May 8, 2027.

*Galagaza Declares Candidacy*

However, in an exclusive interview, Amon Signal Galagaza Nkhata who is a member of the Senior central regional management team has officially confirmed his intention to contest for the position of Regional Chairperson for the Bua Region.

Nkhata said he is ready to take up the challenge to ensure the success and strengthening of the MCP ahead of the 2030 general elections.

“I am ready to take up the challenges for the success of the Malawi Congress Party in 2030,” said Nkhata.

Nkhata, who is campaigning under the slogan *’Galagaza for Bua Regional Chair’*, outlined his credentials and what he brings to the leadership table.

He described himself as a seasoned politician who subscribes to the party’s four cornerstones of Unity, Loyalty, Obedience and Discipline, and its ideologies.

He is a tested and output-oriented former Member of Parliament for Kasungu Central from 2014 to 2019. He also served as Regional Secretary for the Centre, having been conventionally elected in 2015 to date, and is a member of the party’s senior management.

Nkhata further said he is an assertive team player and a goal getter, with strategic organizational skills, and a classic, oratorical and accomplished community mobiliser with sound political judgement.

He has since called for support from all party members and stakeholders.

“The support of everyone to this noble cause is called for,” he said.
