A group of Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) vigilantes on Saturday stoned a vehicle belonging to opposition Malawi Congress Party (MCP) official Moses Kunkuyu near the entrance to Henry Henderson Institute (HHI) in Blantyre.

The incident happened during the 150th anniversary celebrations of the Blantyre Synod of the CCAP, which drew political leaders from across the divide.

Eyewitnesses say the attack happened as vehicles of opposition MCP officials trailed party President Dr. Lazarus McCarthy Chakwera entering the gate. As Chakwera’s vehicle had already entered the premises, a premeditated group started throwing stones, smashing Kunkuyu’s vehicle.

Police in Blantyre have confirmed the incident, verifying that only one vehicle was stoned and no injuries have been observed. Investigations continue.

Contrary to reports circulating on some news outlets, MCP President Chakwera and former First Lady Monica Chakwera were not affected.

Meanwhile, a video clip making rounds on social media shows a group of the vigilantes dressed in combat clothes, some in camouflage, reportedly taking instructions from their leader to deal with any MCP supporter wearing party colours.

The attack has raised concerns over political tolerance as church and state events continue to attract rival party supporters.

MCP is yet to issue an official statement on the matter.
