Mangochi, December 24, Mana. Government has elevated Group Village Headman (GVH) Chiponde of Mangochi to Sub Traditional Authority (T/A) with a call for chiefs in the district to desist from corruption.

Speaking during the elevation ceremony, which was held at Mangochi District Council premises, Deputy Minister of Local Government, Unity and Culture, Owen chomanika said chiefs are the engine of economic development in their areas, hence the need for them to be exemplary.

“The mandate of chiefs is to ensure that people are receiving development projects, as well as to ensure that there is unity and peace in the country.

“As such, we would want to see that chiefs are promoting unity in their areas, because development cannot take place if there is no peace,” said Chomanika.

He therefore advised the newly elevated traditional leader to continue upholding cultural heritage and preservation of historical events.

In his remarks, Senior Chief Chowe who represented Paramount Chief Kawinga at the event, commended government for elevating chiefs in Mangochi saying this is encouraging other traditional leaders to work hard.
Chowe said this signifies that the government of President Chakwera has a heart for the people of Mangochi.

“I am so impressed with what government is doing to us Chiefs here in Mangochi, because it was few weeks ago when we were here again for the elevation of Sub T/A Mapira to a full T/A. This clearly shows how the Chakwera leadership is loving us people of Mangochi,” said Chowe.
“Therefore, my message to the newly elevated Sub T/A is that he should be patriotic and work with the government of the day, to ensure that his area is developed,” Chowe added.

Chairperson for Mangochi District Council, Hassan Chikuta thanked government for various developments that are taking place in the district, among others the construction of bridges along the Makanjira road, as well as the construction of roads in Mangochi town.

Chikuta also asked the ministry of Local government, Unity and Culture to consider elevating other chiefs who were installed years ago.
