Minister of Agriculture Sam Dalitso Kawale on Friday launched the anti Tobacco smuggling campaign at the function which took place in the area of Traditional Authority Mkanda in Mchinji District.

Speaking in an interview soon after the function, Kawale said the anti Tobacco smuggling campaign will help farmers know how the vice is affecting our economy which relies heavily on Tobacco.

The Monister said he was happy that his Ministry has engaged the farmers on the new Tobacco bill which has just been ammended as well as preparing them for the forth coming Tobacco marketing season which is due to open soon.

Kawale discouraged farmers from smuggling Tobacco saying once as a country its good that we sell our products within our designated marketing system.

Kawale also called on farmers to ensure that they produce quality Tobacco so that they are able to fetch good prices at the auction floors.

He said farmers should avoid mixing Tobacco with other materials such as sand and metals.

Commenting on Tobacco Pricing this year , the Minister assured farmers of good prices because of high demand which Malawi leaf is having this year.

He parred away fears that tobacco prices might fall due to overgrowing of the leaf which might affect the demand.

In his speech , Tobacco Commission (TC) Chief Executive Officer Chidanti Malunga advised Tobacco farmers not to be tricked by the Tobacco foreign buyers.

He said smuggling Tobacco should always be avoided because has negative impact on our economy.

He assured farmers that Malawi will give the farmers good prices on their Tobacco and therefore no need to smuggle the leaf.
