Malawi President Dr Lazarus McCarthy Chakwera on Thursday commissioned the 2024 “Takulandilani” Malawi International Tourism Expo at the Bingu International Convention Centre (BICC) in Lilongwe. During the function the president called on stakeholders and all Malawians to take centre stage in selling Malawi and turn it into a tourism destination. Chakwera said it is time for people working at Airports, Foreign countries, vendors and shop owners , scholars at the Universities, media , poets , politicians, and teachers to ask themselves regarding their role. The president said there is need for people to utilize these tourism destinations. Chakwera called on Malawians to welcome all those interested to invest in the tourism sector. The president also called on Government officials to remove all bottle necks. Minister of Tourism Vera Kamtukule has since challenged Malawians to play a frontline role in advancing growth of the tourism sector. Kamtukule said Tourism sector remains great industry which has not been fully utilised. President Chakwera kicked off the much anticipated Agriculture Tourism and Mining (ATM) week when he launched the Agriculture Investment Conference and Mining Investment Forum on 19th April 2024. The promotion runs until 27th April. The Tourism Expo is aimed at showcasing to the world what Malawi has to offer in travel and hospitality. It is also an opportunity for industry leaders, hotel chains and tour operators to converge in one place and present their services. The expo also gives a chance to Malawi to position herself as a leading tourism destination. Tourism, which already rakes in 7 percent of Malawi’s GDP has the potential to further diversify the country’s economy, which is primarily agriculture based.
