Malawi President Dr Lazarus McCarthy Chakwera and Iceland Prime Minister Bjarni Benediktsson on Monday held bilateral discussions on various areas of cooperation in order to strengthen

bilateral relations between Malawi and Iceland.

The meeting was held at the magnificent Kamuzu Palace in Lilongwe.

His Excellency Bjarni Benediktsson, arrived in the country for a 5-day working visit to Malawi yesterday.

Briefing joirnalists soon after the discussions, Minister of Foreign Affairs Nancy Tembo said the discussions bordered on different areas of cooperation such as Health , water sanitation decentralization, vocational skills , training and research.

Tembo said Iceland Government focused their energy in Mangochi as their model due to high girls school drop out rate.

” And because of their interventions we have seen an improvement in the girls remaining in school. We have seen improvement in water and sanitation. We have seen improvement in even health services, especially maternity health services,” he said.

On health services interventions, Tembo gave an example of Makanjira Hospital which the president already inaugrated its construction.

Tembo said Government has successfully negotiated that Iceland should adopt another district to help apart from Mangochi and she said soon Iceland will be rolling out its activities in Nkhotakota.
