By Ray Phillips Recently, a rumor has been circulating especially on social media that the country has run out of fuel, a situation that has potential to cause widespread panic and concern among citizens. However, according to the latest report from the Malawi Energy Regulatory Authority (MERA) released today, this claim is entirely unfounded. According to a May 21, 2024 National Stocks Fuel Report #385, the country has sufficient fuel stocks to meet demand. The report indicates that: “petrol stocks stand at 14.28 million liters, equivalent to 17 days of stock cover, while diesel stocks amount to 21.955 million liters, representing 27 days of stock cover.” Furthermore, the report shows that there are additional stocks in transit, with 0.909 million liters of petrol and 2.911 million liters of diesel expected to arrive in the country soon. This according to MERA, ensures a steady supply of fuel to meet the country’s needs. MERA also notes that despite the fact that some service stations are currently experiencing stockouts of petrol or diesel, this is not due to a national fuel shortage, but rather a result of logistical issues and planned deliveries to restock these stations are underway. In order to rectify the temporary hitch, MERA says it has scheduled deliveries to 86 service stations for petrol and 99 service stations for diesel, ensuring that the fuel supply is replenished and distributed evenly across the country.
