One of the influential member in the opposition Democratic Progressive Party (DPP), Kenneth Bwanali, has requested for disciplinary actions on other officials including party vice president for the centre, Alfred Gangata, Mary Navicha, Jean Mathanga, Chipiliro Mpinganjila, Chimwemwe Chipungu among others on what he calls as gross violation of democratic principles and ethics.

Making the request, through the office of Francis Mphepo, Bwanali in a letter dated 12 July, 2024 claimed that the above mentioned names and others made a directive mandating DPP regional governors to campaign with a preordained list of candidates at the fourth coming party’s convention.

He said this not only erodes the foundation pillars of democracy but it also signifies deplorable descent into authoritarianism.

“The function of regional governors within the convention should be to foster equitable and open environment, enabling all contenders to campaign equitably within their regions,” reads part of the statement.

He further said, delegate autonomy in selecting candidates based on competence and commitment to the party should be safeguarded without prejudice.

He is therefore requesting party President Peter Mutharika to discipline the officials who are also holding roles within convention organizing committee and that they should also be suspended from party’s responsibilities until conclusion of convention.
