Political commentator Ceasar Kondowe has commended Malawi President Dr Lazarus McCarthy Chakwera 1for employing 2,000 police officers as one way of improving security situation in the country. Kondowe says the security situation is key towards improvement of business environment. Another human rights activist Undule Mwakasungula has echoed Kondowe statement saying indeed security is so important in the country especially this time when Malawi is soldering towards elections. Minister of Homeland Security Dr Kenneth Zikhale Ng’oma while speaking in Blantyre disclosed plans to recruit 10,000 police officers in order to improve the country’s security. Ng’oma said it is important to tighten security, as the country is heading toward 2025 general elections. Ng’oma added that as the country’s population is growing,there is need to also increase number of police officers. He further pointed out that Government will continue constructing houses for security officers, as a way of improving the welfare for police officers. “Plans are underway to improve a large increase of funding for our security in the coming financial year. Currently the police population is above 19000. We will recruit and train at least 10,000 more officers in the years to come,” Ng’oma explained. Meanwhile, Deputy Inspector General of the Malawi police services Happy Mkandawire has urged the new police recruits to serve the country with patriotism and professionalism. The same function also happened in Mtakataka and Mulangeni police training schools and a total of over 1990 police officers have been recruited in this cohort.
