UNHCR commends Malawi government on its support toward refugees

The United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees ( UNHCR) has commended the Government of Malawi for it’s continued support toward improving the welfare of refugees and asylum seekers residing in the country.

UNHCR representative Cyr Modeste Kouame made the remarks on Tuesday at capital hill in Lilongwe during the meeting with the Minister of Homeland Security Kenneth Zikhale Ng’oma.

Kouame said: “the government of Malawi through the ministry of homeland is doing a remarkable job in improving lives of refugees and asylum seekers, by mong others clearing asylum seekers with the help of immigration officers department in karonga district”

The UNHCR representative added that strides have been made to resume the process of issuance of convention travel documents to refugees.

On the new site for a refugee camp in chitipa district,Kouame suggested the need for a chitipa district council officials to travel to Zambia for a study visit on the same.

Meanwhile, the minister of Homeland Security Kenneth Zikhale Ng’oma has vowed to work together with UNHCR in improving refugee management which among others includes; refugee status determination processes.

The minister has since welcomed the idea of a study visit to the neighbouring Zambia, saying that a trip will provide a good platform for official from chitipa district to learn more on refugee management.
