In March this year a Kabaza rider plying business from Chiuzira to Gologota was heavily injured after falling into the ditch at the damaged bridge which connect Chiuzira and Gologota via Chimpeni. As that was not enough in May this year another Kabaza rider with a female passenger nearly crushed to death and got reincarnated at Kamuzu Central Hospital following the injuries. CSOs says people of Chiuzira deserves better Since five years ago there has been multiple occurrence of such cases. The Concerned Citizens of Malawi People Power Movement, which advocates for public accountability and the rule of law, has raised alarm and red flag over the long-standing suffering of Chiuzira residents following the destruction of the Chiuzira Bridge that connects Chimpeni to the Chiuzira community. Addressing a press conference in Blantyre, Concerned Citizens Chairperson Edward Kambanje urged authorities to intervene and help repair the bridge. Kambanje said residents of Chiuzira are bearing the brunt of the damage. “For a vehicle to travel from Chiuzira to Chimpeni or Golgotha, drivers are forced to go via Area 23 and Thanki a 15-kilometre detour just to reach Chimpeni,” he said. He called on the area’s Member of Parliament, the Office of the Lilongwe District Commissioner, Lilongwe City Council, and the Ministry of Local Government to urgently assist the people of Chiuzira. According to Samson Tambala of Chiuzira, several people have been injured after falling into the large hole in the bridge. During the same press conference, Concerned Citizens also demanded that government investigate reports that some patients are being asked to pay K100,000 at Chikwawa District Hospital to access healthcare services. “Every Malawian is entitled to the right to access healthcare in this country,” Kambanje said. Some of the pannelists during the press conference included veteran activist, Unandi Banda.
