More than 500 temporary workers engaged by the National Registration Bureau (NRB) say they are still waiting to receive their K350,000 stipends after completing a 10-day registration exercise in Lilongwe Rural and Lilongwe Urban under a UNICEF-supported programme.

Speaking on condition of anonymity, the workers alleged they had also been threatened with police action over accountability matters despite not having received their payments.

They further claimed that, at the time of publication, some workers remained stranded at their respective workstations awaiting transport to Mkwichi Secondary School in Area 47, while others were stranded at the school without transport money to return to their homes.

The workers said delayed payments and the lack of transport support undermine fairness, dignity, and the principles of decent work.

They have appealed to the NRB to urgently process the outstanding stipends and transport allowances and improve the treatment of temporary workers.

Efforts to obtain a comment from the National Registration Bureau were unsuccessful by the time this article was published.
