Malawi President Dr Lazarus McCarthy Chakwera on Saturday hailed the role which the Anglican Church has been playing in its effort of ensuring Malawi is becoming a better place to live.

President Chakwera said this during the installation of the Right Reverend William Mchombo as Bishop of the Anglican Diocese of the Upper Shire at St. Peter and Paul’s Cathedral at Mpondasi in Mangochi.

Chakwera said Anglican Church has played vital role in the improvement of social development of the country.

Chakwera cited schools and clinics and hospitals which Anglican has already built saying are playing vital role in helping Malawians from both rural and urban.

The president has since called on Malawians to join hands in taking Malawians to greater heights.
Chakwera said everyone is given responsibilities and tasks to perform.

During the function, the president ordered the Department of Disaster Management (Dodma) to help people who were affected by the rising effects of Lake Malawi.

The president said these people are suffering following the displacement. These people are from Mwanyama, Mapira, Kalonga, Mpondasi, Saiti , Kadzuwa, Mtalimanja, Chipalamawamba and Ngalamo.

Apart from President Chakwera, several other top government officials also were in attendance.

The Archbishop of Central Africa, the Most Reverend Albert Chama, presided over the service.

Bishop Mchombo replaced Bishop Brighton Malasa, who left the congregation two years ago.

Mchombo was elected bishop by the Episcopal Synod in Lusaka, Zambia, on February 29 this year.

He attended his University studies at the University of Zimbabwe and has been the Bishop of Eastern Zambia since 2003.
